Eris, I think your problem might be your lack of video card. From what you told me about your system settings, it sounds like you have integrated video. Find out how much video ram you have, as Morrowind requires at least 32mb.

Did you recently upgrade to XP, or did it come on your system? If it is a fairly new computer, you should have an AGP graphics card, or a good amount of integrated video ram. Or so I would think. Do some more poking around at system settings when you get up.

I think the reason you can't get up to 32 bit is because you don't have the capacity for it. Here's what the site lists as minimum requirements to run the game.

MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
Windows ME/98 128 MB RAM; Windows XP/2000 256 MB RAM; 500 MHz Intel Pentium III, Celeron, or AMD Athlon processor; 8x CD/DVD-ROM Drive; 1 GB free hard disk space; Windows swapfile; DirectX 8.1 (included); 32MB Direct3D Compatible video card and DirectX 8.1 compatible driver; DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card; Keyboard; Mouse

RECOMMENDED:
800 MHz or faster Intel Pentium III or AMD Athlon processor; 256 MB RAM; NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS, or ATI Radeon 7500 or faster video card.

SUPPORTED VIDEO CARD CHIPSETS*:
NVIDIA GeForce4; NVIDIA GeForce3; NVIDIA GeForce2; NVIDIA GeForce 256; NVIDIA TNT2; ATI Radeon 8500; ATI Radeon 7500; ATI Radeon 7200; ATI Radeon; ATI Rage 128; Matrox G550; Matrox G450; Matrox G400

Just to help keep eris from being more confused by all this computer stuff, I want to clarify that 32-bit color is not related to how much Video RAM you have.

Like Kitty said, though, we need to double check that you have the minimum specs for the game.

If you want to double check what kind of video card you have, right-click on your desktop (anywhere that's blank), choose Properties, select the Settings tab, then click on the Advanced button.

On the tab called Adapter, tell me what the Adapter Type is and what the Memory Size is. That will confirm if the video card qualifies.

Almost all video cards handle 32-bit color. If your card (or computer if the video card is integrated) is more than two years old, it may not have 32MB of video RAM, though. That's a different problem.

You can also post the other computer specs, so we can make sure they qualify, too. Let me know if you need help finding out what they are.

And email me if you want to, too.

(and thanks for helping her out, Kitty. Figures she posts when I'm not around. )

Bran, the adaptor info:

Chip type: Intel(r) 82810
DAC Type: Internal
Memory size: 4 mb (problem?)
Adaptor string: Intel(r) 82810 Graphics controller
Bios information: 2438

Computer is emachine, it came loaded with Windows XP. If I recall correctly, it's almost two years old now.

MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
Windows ME/98 128 MB RAM; Windows XP/2000 256 MB RAM; 500 MHz Intel Pentium III, Celeron, or AMD Athlon processor; 8x CD/DVD-ROM Drive; 1 GB free hard disk space; Windows swapfile; DirectX 8.1 (included); 32MB Direct3D Compatible video card and DirectX 8.1 compatible driver; DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card; Keyboard; Mouse
<font size="2" face="Comic sans ms, Helvetica, sans-serif">Windows XP: 128mb of RAM (ooo problem)
1.0GHz Intel Celeron processor
12x CD-RW drive
4.3 GB free harddrive space (after I loaded the game, btw)
(I have no idea what windows swapfile is or how to look for it)
DirectX 8.1 is on this computer
3d AGP Graphics Intel Direct AGP (I assume this is the thing I was looking up above)
Keyboard, Mouse, check.

Ah well, I'll probably just have to put the game asside with NeverWinter Nights until we get a new and better computer. Not a big deal. You two are awesome for helping me figure this out.

Only 4MB on your graphics? Sucks. I read some of the specs on the card and it doesn't support 32-bit, only goes up to 24-bit.

The solution to your problem would be to upgrade the RAM to 256 from the 128. If it's SDRAM (and I suspect it is with that processor), it's pretty cheap to buy another 128MB ($20?).

You'd also have to buy a new video card. Since the game only needs one like an ATI Radeon 7500, you can get those cheap, too. $40 or so bucks.

So, cost-wise it's cheap to upgrade, but we'd need to confirm that the computer has an AGP slot for the new video card and an extra slot for new memory.

If you give me the model number of the emachine, I think I can look it up and tell you if those upgrades are possible.

Of course, someone would have to be willing to put the new stuff in the computer (it's not that hard, actually). So, how comfortable are you and Dan with a computer?

OK, it says 128mb SyncDram.

And it says it's an emachines T1100.

I took a computer hardware class in college. I know the cover comes off.

Yep, SDRAM. Cheap to buy.

I'll check into that model, see what I can find.

So, the real question. Do you know how to take off the cover?

OK, yet again, I have bought a new game, and yet again, my computer tells me it doesn't like it. It tells me I need to "change windows resolution to True Color (32 bit). So, no problem, right? So I go to my control panel, I click on display, I choose the settings button, and I try to change the color quality to 32 bit. Except 32 bit isn't there. OK, now what?

WAUGH....
